FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND CD LIBRARY NOW NETWORK ENABLED

Up to 100 CDs Available to NT or Novell Workgroups
Access Only, Record Only and Access and Recording

IRVINE, Calif., February 26, 1997 -- Elms Systems CorporationTM today announced networking capabilities for its CD library, a new class of product launched in January with breakthroughs in software integration and pricing. This is another breakthrough for Elms, providing a Novell or NT network 100 CD workgroup solution starting at $8,245 (MSRP) for the software and CD library.

With support for Microsoft NT 3.51 and 4.0, as well as Novell 3.12 and 4.X, Elms now provides network access to 100 on-line CDs organized as single file system in its Digital Versatile LibraryTM (DVLTM).

The network software -- called SmartCD -- is available in three levels of functionality:

-- SmartCD for Access reads and manages CDs in the DVL as a single drive letter or mounted volume. This feature makes the DVL immediately compatible with existing PC and Macintosh applications that currently work with NT and Novell servers. SmartCD for Access supports NT and Novell servers.

-- Smart CD for Recording provides a low-volume, unattended, over-the-network duplication capability for software developers, multimedia developers and others whose recording requirements are 100 CDs or less at a time. SmartCD for Recording runs on NT.

-- SmartCD for Access and Recording allows simultaneous reading and writing from Windows 3.11, Windows 95 or Windows NT clients. Macintosh clients have read access. SmartCD for Recording and Access runs on NT and Novell.

The SmartCD for Access and SmartCD for Recording packages are each priced at $2,750 MSRP, while the SmartCD for Recording and Access is $3,800 MSRP. The Elms DVL, introduced at an MSRP of $5,495, is less than half the price of alternative CD jukebox and tower configurations.

The SmartCD Application Manager provides a graphical interface to the CD library from all Windows desktops. When reading CDs, SmartCD performs three levels of caching to improve performance in multi-user environments: directory, data and read-ahead.

Directory caching creates a bound directory that resides on hard disk to minimize repeated access to CDs. Data caching moves requests for directory information to RAM and virtual memory so that subsequent requests for previously located directory information are rapidly retrieved. Read-ahead caching anticipates that adjacent information will soon be requested and moves it to hard disk.

The SmartCD software opens the DVL innovations to workgroups and developer networks, according to Robert Smith, vice president of marketing. "Now for $8,245 users can install a CD library which makes network sharing of 100 CDs economical. This price point makes applications like the storage of clipart, video/sound libraries, intranet content, source code, manuals, budgets and many other on-line archives a practical possibility," he said. "The unattended duplication capability of SmartCD for Recording is both a hard dollar and productivity advantage for professional content and program developers who need a quick and efficient means of low-volume duplication prior to full-scale production."

The integrated access and recording module dynamically adds a newly-created CD to the file system for immediate access. Other features include simple administration through the network operating system's native features. The system administrator can create collections of icons for icon-based access applications. System administrators set permission and users see only the CDs for which they have rights.

Unlike CD tower configurations, which assign a different letter designation to each drive or tower, the Elms library has one drive letter name regardless of the number of drives. This enables users to create and manage a file system with one volume (and user-defined subdirectories) with up to 65 gigabytes of on-line capacity.

SmartCD resides on an NT or Novell server. The NT version presents all data as a CD File System (CDFS) volume and supports all platforms that can access a CDFS volume, including Macintosh and UNIX systems. The Novell version supports all Netware-enabled PC and Macintosh systems, including resource forks for Macintosh clients.
